The direct deposit threshold for the checking bonus is somewhat steep, at a minimum $7,500 to earn a checking bonus, but if you have the income, this is an easy bonus. Illinois Banking Statistics
State banking stats can provide some unique insight into how people around you manage their money. Here are a few interesting data points on banking in Illinois from the Credit Union National Association and FDIC:
- Banks: There were 358 banks headquartered in Illinois at the end of 2023. While that’s down from 375 the previous year, it’s still a significantly higher number of banks than a lot of states have.
- Credit unions: Similarly, Illinois has a long list of state credit unions, with 21o scattered across the state. These credit unions have a combined 3.97 million members in the state.
- Market share: According to CUNA, banks control 92.1% of the deposit market share in Illinois. 44% of the state’s bank deposits are made with out-of-state banks.
- Largest deposit market: The FDIC reports that the Chicago/Naperville/Elgin market has the most deposits in the state, and also the most banks.
