U.S. Bank is offering up to a $450 bonus for opening a new U.S. Bank Smartly® Checking. This is back towards the lower end of bonuses we've seen from U.S. Bank.
The direct deposit threshold for the checking bonus is somewhat steep to earn the max bonus amount, but if you have the income, this is an easy bonus. You'll have 90 days to reach this target, but keep in mind that unlike some banks that let you hit the bonus in a single transaction, U.S. Bank requires at least two direct deposits to qualify for this promotion.
How To Earn The Bonus
The U.S. Bank Smartly® Checking promotion requires you to set up eligible direct deposits, and optionally, deposit and maintain a minimum balance in order to earn the up to $450 bonus (step-by-step breakdown is listed above!).
As with any offer, don't forget to read the fine print before opening your new account. It's where the bank will clearly state who is eligible for the deal along with any nuances you'll want to be aware of.
The fine print
- You or any owner(s) on your new Bank Smartly Checking account cannot have an existing U.S. Bank consumer checking account, had a U.S. Bank consumer checking account in the last 12 months or received other U.S. Bank consumer checking bonus offers within the past 12 months.
- A direct deposit is an electronic deposit of your paycheck made through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network or an electronic deposit of your government benefits, such as Social Security, from your employer or the government. Other electronic deposits or person-to-person payments are not considered a direct deposit.
- Account must be open and have a positive balance to receive the bonus.
- Offer may not be combined with any other checking account bonus offers.
- Limit one checking bonus per eligible account.
- Offer not available through Alliance partnerships or with Trust Accounts.
- Offer may not be available if you live outside of the U.S. Bank footprint or are not an existing client of U.S. Bank or State Farm.
Open a U.S. Bank Smartly® Checking account before the bonus expires on April 17, 2025

March 11, 2024I called several times to check on the new account bonus. I believe with in the 90 days I called to make sure I did not miss any requirements and when to expect the bonus and told looks like I met all and should get after 90 days of opening the account? I called again and told should be with in 90 days of qualifing deposit. Called back and told it shows I had all qualifing requirements and should get within 60 days of the 90 days. Called back and told they would look into it, don't know why I have not got it and they would call me back. I called again told unknown, appears I made all requiorements, previous note has debit transactions ? but review promo and not a required listed. received first call back and told not a listed requiremnent but asked a lot of fishing type questions and given reasons for other denied reasons and aked if 5 months later still had mailer with promo. I said I would need to look but had and used the promo code on the mailer when opened the account, started online banking, got the mobile app and aranged direct deposits. She called back days later and said I failed to make the debit card use as required but not listed as a requirement. I requested phone transcripts and told did not know about them. Went to branch and requested I meat with someone for a few minutes to give them copies of the promo and previous and current promo with same code and ask for a review of my note and promos and get back to me at their leisure, no hurry. Ask how and to who I could request transcripts and told they did not think they had any? I stated I had years of experience and why those kinds of things are kept and important incase of for instance of proving what was said in court and then told they could not talk to me because I talked of taking them to court and I pointed out I used that as a descriptive reference as to why we keep them and told I said the court word and they would not take my note or copies of their advertised promotions and they could not help me or advise as to who I could talk to. I had requested copies incase I misunderstood my previous calls for my own recollection but told they could not talk to me or give me direction, but they did take my cash deposit and did not offer to return it to me I guess because they could not talk to me anymore? How can they expect do business with someone they will not talk to anymore? The last call I made asking about a letter outline of why the bonus is void they said it showed I qualified and will probably get it 90 days after the 90 day window and does not show new account bonus status of fail. Every time I called told wait and see.

September 7, 2024 Replying to TOM CORDOVASO sorry. US Bank made quite a few errors with my accounts. They can be pretty bad. Their rep can be rude and lack of knowledge. Ask for their supervisor. I am having similar problems with Alliant Credit Union. While they finally honored my $400 bonus, they dishonored my son's bonus. So they are selective. My son does not fight as well. Call BBB as your last recourse.

November 17, 2023I have struggled with U.S. Bank in the past with them not honoring the terms of their promotions. different customer service representatives have given different definitions of what new money is. One told me that it meant money not currently being stored in US Bank but another one said that a transfer from an external bank it’s not new money.

November 17, 2023I got a lower bonus of $300 in November 2021, with lower requirements. So, they've enriched the offer and made it more challenging. No issues with the process.

November 16, 2023Schwab Brokerage counted as direct deposit to get the bonus. Couple this bonus with a US Bank credit card bonus. I found it easier to get approved for the US Bank credit card while I have a checking account with them. Having the Altitude Go credit card will qualify you for no monthly checking account fees.

November 16, 2023USBank has excellent customer service if you ever need to work with them. As far as this bonus goes, my wife and I each used our direct deposit to get this bonus and it worked and they paid us within a couple weeks. I am looking forward to a time 24 months from now when they have a similar promotional offer and we can do it again!

November 14, 2023One of the great things about US Bank bonuses is that you get the option to fund the accounts using a credit card. This allows you to meet min spend on a credit card bonus and/or earn cash back. Be sure to use a chase card for this, as other ones may treat the transaction as a cash advance. If you want to be really sure that you avoid a cash advance, call chase beforehand and have the rep set the cash advance limit to $1.

November 14, 2023You can do credit card funding of $3000 at the time of account opening. It will not take Amex but can use any business card

November 14, 2023I was able to fund this account with an Amex credit card which is rare to be able to. Most banks that allow credit funding only allow Visa or Mastercard.

November 14, 2023I am definitely going to do this bonus when eligible. I can tell you that this bank does a chexsystems report pull. I do wish that all of these bank bonuses documented whether they pull of your reports, such as Credit, Chexsystems, EWS or others.

November 13, 2023A straightforward and generous bonus program. I had some technical issues gaining access to my account which was frustrating, but it happens. Had to keep medium-sized balance in account to avoid monthly fee.

November 9, 2023If you’re outside the footprint of U.S. Bank, you can open a self directed brokerage account online which will then allow you to do this promotion or any other promo at this bank.

November 9, 2023I opened this account up at the start of summer. The instructions and expectations were clear and concise. I deposited the minimum to avoid fees and set up direct deposit. I had $300 bonus in my account when it was all said and done.

November 7, 2023This is one we are considering, perhaps next round tho. I like that banks offer similar bonus offers repeatedly so if you don't get into it this month, chances are likely you will the next time.

November 3, 2023I am frequent hunter of bank bonuses and at this rate I might have already received a total of 5 bonuses from different banks this year alone. US Bank is a great bank with a super user friendly mobile application. Their application process is super smooth and intuitive. Moreover, after I opened the bank account, an employee from a local branch around my neighborhood called and welcomed me to the bank, provided me their contact info and graciously offered for me to call anytime for help. And the cherry on top of all this is the bank bonus was deposited into my account EXACTLY the day I fulfilled the requirements, which is unusual given my experience. All in all, US Bank is a GREAT bank to be a part of and they are true to their word.

November 3, 2023It’s annoying that US Bank prevents you from getting this if you’ve had an account with them in the past 2 years. Most other banks seem to do it based on the date of your last bonus. It just seems overly restrictive to me.
