Why Truist Bank?

SunTrust and BB&T merged in 2019 to form Truist, becoming the sixth-largest bank in the U.S. with more than 10 million customers. WIth that said, as of early 2022, they were still rolling out the merger. They position themselves as being community-focused, pledging to "lend or invest $60 billion to low- and moderate-income and minority borrowers" from 2020-2022 alone.

New customers can now open an account under the Truist brand, but all SunTrust and BB&T accounts will eventually be folded in – so if you're interested, stop by whichever brand is most readily available in your area.

Truist assures that most customers won't need updated account numbers – and that they're committed to making the process easy for those few customers that do – but, as with any merger, know that the risk of inconvenience in needing new checks, debit cards, or in updating bills that draw from the account is certainly a possibility once the merger is finalized.

Additionally, it's safe to assume that their products or tools are in line with the other major national banks – IE, a wider breadth of options but lower interest rates than most credit unions or online-only banks.

Truist One Checking

Truist Bank recently overhauled their personal checking account line up, simplifying down to just two products. Truist One is their flagship account, and has tiered benefits based on how much you keep in your Truist accounts. Keep in mind, the balances across your entire "Truist One Portfolio" count toward these tiers, including checking, savings, CDs, IRAs, and investments.

They call these tiers "levels", and there are 5 in total, from Level 1 to Level Premier.

Level 1 is the default, and comes with a 10% loyalty bonus for any rewards you earn on your Truist credit cards, free checks, a fee-free savings account, and $100 negative balance buffer for eligible customers.

To reach Level 2, you'll need to maintain at least $25,000 in the account, and it bumps your loyalty bonus to 30% plus a few non-Truist ATM reimbursements each month.

At the highest level, you'll need $100,000 in your portfolio. In exchange, you earn a 50% loyalty bonus, unlimited ATM reimbursements, waived maintenance fees, and a significant discount on their Delta SkyMiles® Debit Card annual fee.

Fees

Truist One Checking does charge a monthly maintenance fee of $12, but there are ways to get this waived:

  • Make $500 in total qualifying direct deposits per statement cycle.
  • OR, maintain a total combined ledger balance of $500 or more in Truist related accounts across personal deposits and all investments as reflected on the business day before your statement cycle end date.
  • OR, have a linked Truist credit card, mortgage or consumer loan (excluding LightStream®), or linked small business checking account.
  • OR, be a student under 25.

One of the requirements says, "Within the same 90 days, complete at least 15 qualifying debit card purchases." so I'm wondering if there is any minimum for each of those 15 qualifying debit card purchases? Can someone help me understand this part? or should I assume that can be any amount as it's not mentioned in the offer?

My wife and I signed up for this bonus and she missed it because the day they tried to deposit the bonus there was a $0 balance. So, word to the wise make sure you have money in the account when they go to deposit your bonus! Other than my oversight this one is easy to get.

My experience was that after opening the account online they shut it down immediately, and flagged it as fraud. I called and they said to go to a local branch and show ID and that they would fix it. I went to a local branch with my ID and they fixed it in 10 minutes. I went back to work and logged into the account successfully. I faked DD with Schwab Brokerage instead of employer, and they paid the bonus within a few weeks. This is an easy bonus besides the initial hassle of ID verification and shutdown.

I've completed both the Truist checking and business bonuses. For some reason, I was denied the business bonus when I applied online so I went inside a branch and didn't have any issues. However, just be sure to close the account once you're done because I kept getting charged a $3 fee that I wasn't aware of until it had accumulated to over $30. Truist would not waive the fee so I had to pay it out of pocket. Always check your spreadsheets to confirm you're not only opening the accounts on time, but closing them on time as well.

This was one of the more aggravating bonuses I've tried to earn. Due to issues with the application process (online), I ended up having to go into a branch to open the account (which was very time consuming). I did finally end up earning my $400 bonus in mid 2023. My wife also pursued this bonus and there were also issues for her. A few days after opening the account (which included an initial $50 deposit), we received a letter from Truist saying that they were closing the account. They didn't provide details, only that they reserved the right to do that. And thus began our waiting to receive the initial $50 deposit back. It never happened (even though their letter indicated it would be mailed to us). We finally went back into the branch and they shared that the account wasn't really closed...and also they started taking a monthly fee out of the initial $50 deposit. We ended up getting the fees reimbursed, but by then it was too late to qualify for the bonus, so we missed out. We closed both accounts soon thereafter. Overall, not a great experience and I would focus on other offers before going for this one.

Is anyone getting an error while trying to apply online? It’s asking me to visit the branch which is couple of hours drive for me in the state?

I asked the agent on phone and he clarified that since the nearest branch is more than 100 miles, they cannot do online or on phone for me

You can track your bonus status here: https://offers.truist.com/

I did this bonus earlier this year and the only issue was that I had to go to the branch to be able to set up online banking.

I would love to take advantage of this offer, but I have a couple accounts with them including my mortgage. Not to mention all my credit cards are linked with auto pay. I wonder if there is anyway around closing the checking account to take advantage of this offer?

RyanInFlorida- It says you can NOT have a checking account open since 7-26-2022. Plus in 2021 we dealt with them when them when they merged with Sun Trust. It was a difficult transaction. I would try elsewhere. Whenever you need an exception, it is never easy, or guaranteed.

I personally didn’t have a good experience with this bank. I signed-up online, made an initial deposit and setup direct deposits. A few days later got a notification that they closed my account (no reason given). Locked me out of online access so i had to go into a branch to close it. I work on a yacht so i wasn’t near a branch for a couple months. When i finally went in to inquire, they said there was nothing they could do, no information they could provide, and that my deposit was eaten up in monthly maintenance fees. It was probably just a fluke of some sort because i see others were successful. Maybe I’ll try again next year.

How interesting. My wife had this EXACT same experience. It was very frustrating and sketchy. We were able to get our fees reimbursed, but overall it was a bad banking experience.

When I did a bonus for Truist a few months ago, I had to call in to get my online account set up. Just keep that in mind if you’re having issues.

I did this promotion this year when the bonus was 400 USD. I opened a checking account at the beginning of April 2023 and met the requirements with direct deposits by the middle of May. I received the bonus at the end of May and it was my first ever experience with the bank bonuses. I may add that the Truist online banking system is very easy to use and all the interactions with the bank manager left a good impression. Highly recommend this bank for everyday use. I closed the account in July in order to be able to repeat the promotion next year.

A super easy bonus to qualify for. I've received this bonus 3 times. I've used Wells Fargo and Chase to meet direct deposit requirements for myself and P2.

How were you able to receive this bonus more than once? Can you explain? Are you also saying you used Wells Fargo and Chase to push ACH deposit to Truist and it worked for the direct deposit?

Dan, from past experience, TRUIST is VERY strict. I would not count on doing a ACH and risking your bonus. Plan on doing a true DD to make sure you will get your bonus, for all of your efforts.
