at WECU

Whatcom Educational Credit Union, more commonly known as WECU, is offering a $250 bonus for opening their premium Spend Plus Rewards checking account.

To earn the reward, you'll need to receive a direct deposit of just $100 in the first 2 months after account opening, making this a really attractive offer.

The account does have a small monthly fee, but it's waived just by meeting the bonus requirements.

Keep in mind that like all credit union bonuses, you'll first need to meet the requirements to join before unlocking access to the account offers.

How To Earn The Bonus

The WECU Spend Plus Rewards Checking promotion requires you to set up direct deposits in order to earn the $250 bonus (step-by-step breakdown is listed above!).

As with any offer, don't forget to read the fine print before opening your new account. It's where the credit union will clearly state who is eligible for the deal along with any nuances you'll want to be aware of.

The fine print

  • Offer is available for a limited time to qualifying individuals who have not been a member in the last twelve (12) months.

Why Whatcom Educational Credit Union?

Spend Plus Rewards Checking

Spend Plus Rewards is WECU's premium checking account, offering both a rewards program and a high yield on balances up to $5,000.

With Spend Plus Rewards, you'll earn 1 point for every $20 you spend using your debit card, 10 points for every $1,000 in WECU loans, and 250 points for a WECU mortgage. If you also have a WECU credit card, you can add to your rewards balance by earning 1.5 points for every dollar you spend using your credit card. You can then redeem points ($0.01 per point) for cash, travel, gift cards, or charity donations.

The Spend Plus Rewards account also offers up to $10 per month in ATM refunds, early payday, and all of the other features you'd expect from a checking account: online and mobile banking, mobile check deposit, bill pay, credit and debit card instant locks, and more.

Fees

Spend Plus Rewards Checking does charge a monthly maintenance fee of $5, but there are ways to get this waived:

  • Receive at least $100 in direct deposits each month

How to Join Whatcom Educational Credit Union

Credit unions differ from banks in that they restrict membership based on a shared common bond, or the credit union’s “field of membership”.

That means in order to qualify for this bonus (or any offer from a credit union), you'll first need to meet one of WECU's membership requirements:

  • Live, work, worship, or attend school in Washington, OR
  • Have a relative who is a member of WECU, OR
  • Be an alumni of Western Washington University.

Keep in mind that nearly all credit unions have a "once a member, always a member" policy, so once you're in, the above restrictions no longer apply.
