UFirst Credit Union is offering up to $400 to new members who open a personal checking account. The bonus is structured a little differently than others. Instead of a single set of requirements, UFirst has both a direct deposit requirement and a debit card requirement, and each will earn you $50 per month, for up to 3 months. On top of that, they'll give you $50 just for opening the account and another $50 for keeping it 6 months.
While that may initially sound confusing, the requirements are flexible and actually pretty easy – especially considering the potential for a total bonus of $400.
Keep in mind that each requirement (direct deposit and debit card transactions) run independently of each other, but that the 3 months of meeting either need to be consecutive. In other words, if you meet the direct deposit requirement in March to earn $50, you must meet it again in April and May to earn the full $150. If you miss the requirement in April, further eligibility is forfeited. The debit card transaction requirement, however, will not be impacted.
How To Earn The Bonus
The UFirst CU Personal Checking promotion requires you to optionally, set up direct deposits and make purchases using the account's card in order to earn the up to $400 bonus (step-by-step breakdown is listed above!).
As with any offer, don't forget to read the fine print before opening your new account. It's where the credit union will clearly state who is eligible for the deal along with any nuances you'll want to be aware of.
The fine print
- To be considered a new member, accounts must be opened on or after June 12, 2023 and have no preexisting accounts with the same Primary SSN within one year prior to the open date.
- You must claim enrollment in the offer to be eligible.
- Only personal general membership accounts are eligible (no businesses, trusts, associations, etc).
- Primary member must be over the age of 18.

- To be eligible for transaction/direct deposit payouts, member must not have received any promotional payouts for any transaction/direct deposit promotions from University Federal Credit Union within 5 years prior to account opening.
- When direct deposit criteria are met, members are eligible for a maximum of 3 payouts of $50 each, for a total of $150.
- When transaction criteria are met, members are eligible for a maximum of 3 payouts of $50 each, for a total of $150.
- The 3 payouts for both the direct deposit and transaction requirements must be earned in consecutive months. If a month is missed, members will not be eligible for further payouts from that requirement.
- Debit Card Transactions do not include ATM transactions or returns, and they must post to the account by the end of the eligibility window (that month) to be counted.

How to Join UFirst Credit Union
Credit unions differ from banks in that they restrict membership based on a shared common bond, or the credit union’s “field of membership”.
That means in order to qualify for this bonus (or any offer from a credit union), you'll first need to meet one of UFirst CU's membership requirements:
- Live, work, go to school, worship or volunteer in Salt Lake, Davis, Summit, Tooele, Wasatch Counties in Utah.
- Have an immediate family member who is a member of UFirst Credit Union
Keep in mind that nearly all credit unions have a "once a member, always a member" policy, so once you're in, the above restrictions no longer apply.
