San Mateo Credit Union's Half Moon Bay branch is offering a $100 bonus for those who stop by and open a new Premium Checking account.

The requirements to earn the welcome offer are the same requirements that you'll need to meet each month to earn the interest on your deposits: debit card purchases plus one direct deposit of any amount.

Premium Checking has no monthly fee and earns a really competitive rate on your balances up to $50k, so this $100 offer is really just the cherry on top.

How To Earn The Bonus

The San Mateo Credit Union Premium Checking promotion requires you to set up direct deposits and make purchases using the account's card in order to earn the $100 bonus. Full requirements to receive this bonus are:

  1. Open a new Premium Checking account at the Half Moon Bay location.
  2. Enroll in eStatements.
  3. In the first full month, make 10 debit card purchases that total $100.
  4. Also in the first full month, receive 1 direct deposit of any amount.
  5. Bonus will be credited to your new account the following month.

The fine print

  • Offer only applies to new San Mateo Credit Union (SMCU) Premium Checking accounts (no other account types eligible).
  • ATM and ACH transactions do not qualify as debit card transactions.
  • In the case of a joint account, purchases and payments from multiple debit cards will be added together.
  • Membership eligibility requirements apply.
  • Must be age 18 or older.
  • Offer is not available for existing SMCU members who have an open checking account as of August 20, 2021.
  • Existing SMCU members who do not have a checking account as of August 20, 2021 may qualify for the offer.

Why San Mateo Credit Union?

Premium Checking

Premium Checking is a fee-free checking account that also happens to earn a very competitive interest rate (1% APY at the time of writing!) on your deposits up to $50,000.

Keep in mind that in order to earn the interest, you'll need to be enrolled in eStatements and each month you'll need to make 10 debit card purchases and 1 direct deposit.

The account has a $20 opening deposit requirement, but no ongoing balance requirements after that.

Fees

Premium Checking does not charge a monthly fee.

How to Join San Mateo Credit Union

Credit unions differ from banks in that they restrict membership based on a shared common bond, or the credit union’s “field of membership”.

That means in order to qualify for this bonus (or any offer from a credit union), you'll first need to meet San Mateo Credit Union's membership requirements:

  • You live, work, worship, or attend school in San Mateo County, the City of Palo Alto, or select San Francisco zip codes: 94110, 94112, 94116, 94122 94124, 94132, or 94134
  • OR, you are a member of or employed by one of their partner organizations or businesses
  • OR, you have a family member, domestic partner, or roommate that is a member of SMCU

Keep in mind that nearly all credit unions have a "once a member, always a member" policy, so once you're in, the above restrictions no longer apply.

San Mateo Credit Union Locations

Credit unions are community-based, and a lot of the time this means they serve a specific geographic footprint.

Sometimes eligibility requirements will mean that you need to live, work, or worship in that area to become a member. Other times, you may be required to visit a branch to take advantage of a welcome offer. Or, you may just prefer a credit union with locations near you.
