at PSECU

Back for 2024, PSECU is offering up to $300 to new members who open a personal checking account. This time around they've broken the bonus into 2 parts.

Something else to keep in mind: if you have ties with any of the PA entities that PSECU has a relationship with, you can join outright. But if not, you can still gain eligibility by joining Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society (PRPS) through PSECU. For more information, read the eligibility requirements section below.

How To Earn The Bonus

The PSECU Checking Account promotion requires you to optionally, set up direct deposits in order to earn the up to $300 bonus (step-by-step breakdown is listed above!).

As with any offer, don't forget to read the fine print before opening your new account. It's where the credit union will clearly state who is eligible for the deal along with any nuances you'll want to be aware of.

The fine print

  • Promotion open to U.S. Residents who are 18 years of age or older at the time the account is opened.
  • Limit one (1) new member Hit the Right Note bonus per tax identification number used to open a new PSECU account.
  • You will not be eligible for the Hit the Right Note bonus if you are a current PSECU member, have closed an account within the past 12 months, or have received any new member incentive bonus within the past 12 months.
  • Direct deposit must be a paycheck, social security payment, or pension payment.
  • Qualifying payroll direct deposits are defined as paychecks, Social Security payments, and pension payments.
  • There's a path for everyone to join PSECU.
  • Employees, agents and officials of PSECU, and immediate family members of any of these are not eligible for this promotion.
  • Members who open accounts and/or loans by fraudulent, suspicious, or illegal means, including but not limited to providing PSECU with fraudulent or fabricated information, are not eligible to participate in this bonus offer.
  • PSECU may adjust the deposited bonus or remove the deposited bonus at any time if PSECU suspects accounts and/or loans were opened by fraudulent, suspicious, or illegal means, including but not limited to providing PSECU with fraudulent or fabricated information.
  • $5 is required to open and maintain a Regular share account. This $5 share deposit is also required to be eligible to receive the $300, and the member must be in good standing as defined by PSECU's Bylaws Article II, Section 1.
  • A $5 minimum share purchase will be made on behalf of the new member by PSECU. If the member account is closed within the first year of membership, the initial $5 share will be retained by PSECU.
  • Withdrawals and fees may reduce earnings on the account.
  • The recipient of the bonus (up to $300) is solely responsible for payment of applicable taxes on that amount. If you have any questions, please seek the advice of a qualified tax professional.

How to Join Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union

Credit unions differ from banks in that they restrict membership based on a shared common bond, or the credit union’s “field of membership”.

That means in order to qualify for this bonus (or any offer from a credit union), you'll first need to meet one of PSECU's membership requirements:

  • Reside with, or have a relative who is a PSECU member.
  • Currently attend, have attended, graduated from or work at a Pennsylvania colleges or universities.
  • Work for PA state or local governments, Municipalities and school districts, or Select Employee Groups (SEGS)
  • Become a member of the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society (PSECU will cover the $20 fee when you open your PSECU account online).
In order to take advantage of PSECU's products and services, you must be a member of PSECU. There's a path for everyone and you can join PSECU through PRPS, at the Friend level. PSECU will cover the $20 dues. To continue your relationship with PSECU, you do not need to maintain PRPS membership. If you do not wish to join PRPS, call them at 800.237.7328, extension 3133, so they may help you with PSECU eligibility.

Keep in mind that nearly all credit unions have a "once a member, always a member" policy, so once you're in, the above restrictions no longer apply.

This is richer than when I got a bonus in late 2022, for $250. Opened immediately online, no issues.

It was a hard credit pull for me. The application process was easy. Can fund the account with a credit card up to $100. I used a Visa.

The instructions for opening this account are more complicated than the actual opening of the account was. A few hoops to jump through, but just direct deposit $200 cumulative/month for 90 days and you’ll get the bonus. No minimum balance; no maintenance fees.

This just doesn't seem worth it because of the hard credit pull. There are so many other bonuses that don't require this, so I don't know why this bank insists.

pretty sure there is not a hard credit pull on this, at least I don't recall seeing one on my credit history.

I see quite a few reports online of hard pulls, so I'm probably going to stay away even if there's a chance of not getting one.

Daniel, Do you normally keep your credit reports frozen? Did you thaw for this application? Have you checked your reports since applying?

One of the best bonuses on here. I didn't have any problems signing up for this credit union from Tennessee. Also the bonus payouts are very fast.
