First Tech is offering up to a $300 welcome bonus when you open a First Tech checking account and complete direct deposits. This is a tiered bonus, the higher your direct deposit, the more you can earn.
While they are primarily targeting a limited Oregon audience, this offer is nationwide as membership is granted through affiliation with either the Computer History Museum or the Financial Fitness Association. These accounts can be opened online and it's also been reported that FTFCU will pay those fees as well.
Note: this offer is open to both new and existing account holders.
How To Earn The Bonus
The First Tech Rewards Checking® promotion requires you to set up eligible direct deposits in order to earn the up to $300 bonus (step-by-step breakdown is listed above!).
As with any offer, don't forget to read the fine print before opening your new account. It's where the credit union will clearly state who is eligible for the deal along with any nuances you'll want to be aware of.
The fine print
- First Tech employees are not eligible.
- Direct deposits are considered new if there has been no direct deposit activity in the Participant's share accounts on which they are the Primary Owner within the previous 18 months..
- Direct deposits from a non-employer payroll source do not qualify.
- EXAMPLE: If a member’s initial direct deposit is March 1, 2025, additional required direct deposits must occur at least once in each subsequent calendar month following the month in which the initial direct deposit is made, the last direct deposit must be received by June 29, 2025.

How to Join First Tech Federal Credit Union®
Credit unions differ from banks in that they restrict membership based on a shared common bond, or the credit union’s “field of membership”.
That means in order to qualify for this bonus (or any offer from a credit union), you'll first need to meet one of First Tech's membership requirements:
- You have a family member or household member who is already a First Tech member
- You or a family member work for an innovative company on their partner list or for the State of Oregon
- Work or live in Lane County, Oregon
- Belong to the Computer History Museum or the Financial Fitness Association
Keep in mind that nearly all credit unions have a "once a member, always a member" policy, so once you're in, the above restrictions no longer apply.

August 10, 2024Can someone confirm if each direct deposit must be at least $1,000 or can it be multiple direct deposits totaling $1,000 or more each month (i.e. two $500 deposits)?

November 17, 2023I am a homemaker, so we use my husband's paycheck for direct deposit. The fine print says "New direct deposit must occur...from the Participant’s employer payroll into any account of which the Participant is the primary account owner." I'm worried this means I would be disqualified from earning the bonus. I've received dozens of bank bonuses using my husband's paychecks...but no other bank has been this specific in their fine print on this point. Has anyone had success getting the bonus with their spouse's paycheck used for direct deposit, rather than their own?

November 16, 2023I was able to open an account and get a bonus from this bank, yet I live in Illinois. It was a clean experience. Took 3 days to get approved. I had to keep deposits active for 120 days, so took some time and focus. I closed completely online, which is a nice convenience (over having to call in).
