Available nationwide (via membership with the American Consumer Council) with the ability to open online, United States Senate Federal Credit Union is offering up to $500 in welcome bonuses when you open a new Senate Checking account. This is a tiered offer, so the more activities you complete, the more you can earn. The additional bonuses require direct deposit, establishing a money market account and getting a share CD.

How To Earn The Bonus

The United States Senate Federal Credit Union Senate Checking promotion requires you to make purchases using the account's card, and optionally, set up direct deposits and deposit and maintain a minimum balance in order to earn the up to $500 bonus (step-by-step breakdown is listed above!).

As with any offer, don't forget to read the fine print before opening your new account. It's where the credit union will clearly state who is eligible for the deal along with any nuances you'll want to be aware of.

The fine print

  • A “qualifying direct deposit” is a direct deposit of regular monthly income – such as your salary, pension, or Social Security benefits, which are made by your employer or other payer – using account and routing numbers that you provide to them. Teller deposits, wire transfers, debit card transfers, ATM transfers or deposits, online and mobile Banking transfers or deposits, or transfers from a bank or brokerage account or investment account do not qualify.
  • One certificate bonus per member.
  • Certificate must still be open at the time of the promotional payment.

How to Join United States Senate Federal Credit Union

Credit unions differ from banks in that they restrict membership based on a shared common bond, or the credit union’s “field of membership”.

That means in order to qualify for this bonus (or any offer from a credit union), you'll first need to meet one of United States Senate Federal Credit Union's membership requirements:

  • Be an employee of US Senate FCU's select employer groups.
  • Be immediately related to an existing member.
  • Be a member of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society.
  • Be a member of the American Consumer Council (use promo code USSFCU to waive the $8 fee).

Keep in mind that nearly all credit unions have a "once a member, always a member" policy, so once you're in, the above restrictions no longer apply.

This application required many hoops. I first joined the American Consumer Council (it was free), and had to upload multiple documents to their online application tool. But then was denied anyway. A waste of my time.

This financial institution is ChexSystems sensitive which means they deny you if you have too many inquiries. It happened to me.

How many inquiries did you have (over what time period) when you were denied?

I wonder if there are additional requirements that aren't posted on the website. Or maybe it's just them looking too closely at other bank account inquiries...
