Renewed for 2025, CEFCU is offering a $225 welcome bonus when you open a new personal checking account and one of the required activities. This offer is only open to California residents.
How To Earn The Bonus
The CEFCU Personal Checking Account promotion requires you to optionally, set up eligible direct deposits, deposit and maintain a minimum balance and make purchases using the account's card in order to earn the up to $225 bonus (step-by-step breakdown is listed above!).
As with any offer, don't forget to read the fine print before opening your new account. It's where the credit union will clearly state who is eligible for the deal along with any nuances you'll want to be aware of.

- Must enroll in e-statements before the end of that first full calendar month.
- Account must be in good standing as of the bonus fulfillment date.
- Your bonus will be deposited to the CEFCU Savings account associated with your new Checking account within 4 to 6 weeks of the end of the third full calendar month following account opening.

How to Join Citizens Equity First Credit Union
Credit unions differ from banks in that they restrict membership based on a shared common bond, or the credit union’s “field of membership”.
That means in order to qualify for this bonus (or any offer from a credit union), you'll first need to meet one of CEFCU's membership requirements:
- Be a U.S. Citizen, or resident alien, who is at least 18 years of age, and lives or works in one of these Illinois counties: Bond, Christian, Clinton, Fulton, Jersey, Knox, Livingston, Logan, Macon, Macoupin, Madison, Marshall, Mason, McLean, Monroe, Montgomery, Peoria, Putnam, Randolph, Saint Clair, Sangamon, Stark, Tazewell, Washington, or Woodford.
- Be a U.S. Citizen, or resident alien, who is at least 18 years of age, and lives, works, or regularly worships in one of these California counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, or Santa Clara.
- Be an employee or retiree of Caterpillar Inc., Caterpillar subsidiaries, or Caterpillar Dealerships.
- Be an employee or retiree of a CEFCU partner company.
- Be an immediate family member or in same household of someone who is eligible to join CEFCU.
- Be the spouse of a member who has passed away.
- Be a CEFCU employee or retiree
Keep in mind that nearly all credit unions have a "once a member, always a member" policy, so once you're in, the above restrictions no longer apply.
